4 Unique Events in Cary

Cary, North Carolina is considered one of the safest places to live in the country. It is near the famous NC Research Triangle and is considered a family-oriented, green city. As an added bonus, the huge variety of festivals and events in Cary provide an interesting and entertaining variety of things to do throughout the year.

MLK, Jr. Dreamfest

To celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Dreamfest offers several free events that are open to the public. It takes place in January and February and includes presentations by notable people as well as inspiring performances by famous singers who aim to encourage creative expression in the performing arts. There is also a commemorative march and the showing of several films on Dr. King.

Independence Day Events

There are several programs for Independence Day for people living in Cary as well as visitors from the region. These free events start on July 3rd at the Cary Arts Center with a show and live music that celebrates liberty and freedom. On July 4th, in Bond Park from 7:30AM – 3PM, there are traditional Independence Day activities for the whole family. If you are inclined, you can start with a fishing competition from 8AM – 10AM on the waterfront where prizes are awarded for the longest and shortest fish in several age groups. From 9:30 – 10:30, participants decorate their bikes, strollers, wagons or other small battery-powered vehicles and enjoy a child-friendly parade. These are just the first few activities on offer at this amazing event. You can expect contests, scavenger hunts, thrill rides, and much more including the awe-inspiring fireworks display after the last concert.

Wheels on Academy

Cary offers auto aficionados a special day in May from 9am – 2pm. It takes place in the streets of downtown and at the Cary Town Hall Campus. Visitors see exotic cars, vintage cars, and the latest hotrods. There are food concessions that include BBQ and donuts as well as entertainment suitable for the whole family. For those who have a special car they would like to show at the festival, there are registration forms available in February. You can expect to see a Model T taken apart and reassembled by the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Triangle Chapter. The music lasts into the night and there is no admission fee.

Tobacco Road Marathon and Half-Marathon

The Tobacco Road Marathon in Cary, North Carolina is a fast, flat, and fun run that takes place in mid-March. Runners’ World named it one of the 10 best new marathons. The trail is 20 miles along the American Tobacco Trail, and it is a Boston Qualifier for those who are looking for the next big run. The course is flat except for the fantastic downhill finish, and if you have the time or inclination, you can see some of the most beautiful scenery in the state.

Beer and Bacon Fest

Mid-April is the time to taste bacon from all over the country at the Beer and Bacon Fest. This fantastic bacon is grilled on-site until 3PM and there is live music all day. There’s even a hog butchering class for those inclined. There are several levels of tickets, including VIP admission and regular admission. More than 15 restaurants have tasting stations.
